In short, Yahoo! is not stopping the federation, but is phasing off OpenID 2.0 and switching to OpenID Connect. On the way, they seem to plan to create a central RP endpoint to accept OpenID Connect assertions and SSO to their properties from it, so they do not have to maintain per site codes like now.

For the past 6 years,a German shepherd called Capitán has slept next to the grave of his owner every night at 6pm. His owner,Miguel Guzmán died in 2006. Capitán,the dog,disappeared while the family attended the funeral services. A week later reatives of Guzmán were visiting the cemetery when they were astounded to find the dog next to the owner's grave. So, many of the security bugs of OpenID 2.0 implementations was actually that of 1) XML Parsing (e.g., Facebook), and 2) Handling canonicalization on the signature badly. In OpenID Connect, we avoided them by standardizing onto JSON and JSON Web Signature. Hopefully, the implementations are going to be less error prone this time.
